How to Estimate the Number of Boxes You Need for Your Move

Moving & Packing Supplies in Holiday, FL

Congratulations—you’re moving! Getting ready to make a home out of a brand-new house is an exciting prospect, and probably a little bit of a scary one.

Preparing yourself for a move can be stressful, especially when you don’t know where to start or what you’ll need. One of the first questions you ask yourself will probably be, how many boxes am I going to need?!

Don’t worry—our experts are here to help!

Factors to consider when you buy your moving boxes:

When you head to your local moving supply shop, you’ll want to keep in mind the following information as you stock up on provisions:

Number of Rooms

Are you currently living in a 2-bedroom house? Studio apartment? Luxurious 5-bedroom mansion? The more rooms you have in your current residence, the more boxes you’ll need to relocate their contents.

Square Footage

How big are those rooms? If your “home office” is the size of a walk-in closet, you won’t need as many boxes as you would for two full-sized bedrooms.

Number of Residents

Moving from an apartment to a house with your significant other is going to require fewer supplies than moving your husband and three kids to a new place. More people = more stuff!

Years Lived In

The more time you spend in a space, the more time your possessions have had to accumulate.

Lifestyle

Do you live modestly? Or favor a minimalist approach to materialism? Is your basement filled with stacks of old letters and yearbooks from high school? Be honest about how much you have because the more there is, the more boxes you’ll need!

Types of boxes:

Knowing how much room you’ll be working with in the boxes you buy will help give you a better idea of how many you’re really going to need. Standard moving boxes typically come in four different sizes:

  • Small—about 1.5 cubic feet
  • Medium—up to about 3 cubic feet
  • Large—up to about 4.5 cubic feet
  • Extra Large—up to about 6 cubic feet

You’re also going to want to get yourself a few specialty boxes to help move some of your more fragile items. Consider buying wardrobe boxes, electronics boxes, dish barrel boxes (for breakables), mirror/picture boxes, and lamp boxes to make your move easier.

Don’t forget: Different sized boxes still have the same weight limit. Don’t pack larger boxes with heavy items, or you risk them breaking or being too difficult to carry.
